Electronic cigarettes are being marketed as a viable alternative to smoking tobacco cigarettes. The question that many people are asking is if these new ecigs are safe. In order to make an informed decision about the health risks associated with electronic cigarettes, we’ll need to do a head-to-head comparison with tobacco cigarettes, before drawing any conclusions.

Contrary to what most people think, it is not the nicotine that is the health risk associated with cigarettes. Instead it is the 4000+ toxic chemicals that are inhaled, every time you take a puff on a tobacco cigarette. It is the tobacco cigarette smoke that is responsible for things like lung cancer and respiratory problems. Electronic cigarettes, on the contrary do not produce smoke. As such none of the 4000 toxins found in tobacco cigarettes are in an electronic cigarettes plume.

So what about the nicotine? Is it safe? Well the answer to that question is still yet to be conclusively answered. The e-cigarette is just another nicotine delivery method like nicotine gum or the patch, so its nicotine danger would be equivalent to these other nicotine delivery methods. What is conclusive is the fact that an ecig does not deliver smoke and those associated ills.

You may have read that the FDA recently found trace elements of a carcinogen in a single sample of one manufactures electronic cigarette cartridge. What you may not be aware of is that this same carcinogen is also evident in other nicotine delivery systems such as the gum and patch. You should also be away that a number of everyday consumer products such as peanut also contain trace elements of carcinogens. This is not to suggest that you should not be concerned about such things, but instead to keep things in prospective.

It’s important to remember that the dose of a particular carcinogen is an important factor in it’s toxicity. If carcinogens are present in e-cigarette vapor, it doesn’t not appear to be in high doses. Right now there is no evidence that these carcinogens are even translated into the actual electronic cigarette vapor that is inhaled.

So again, are electronic cigarettes completely safe? Until there are conclusive tests conducted, it may be best to make the assumption that they are not completely safe. However, if you compare an electronic cigarette to a real cigarette, there is absolutely no comparison. What we all know is tobacco smoking is terribly dangerous, expensive and more and more, anti-social. Electronic cigarettes, give smokers a real alternative that is easy to transition to and far more affordable. Given a choice between the two, I think the answer is an obvious one.
