Pre-built coils questions

So I bought my first RTA a while back and picked up some pre-made .4 ohm kanthal Claptons that the shop owner made. They worked fine but seemed to lose stop hitting very well after about a day. Just not heating up very fast and such. Also, they were completely black after a day.

I then bought some pre-made .3 ohm staple staggered fused kanthal claptons. They worked better, but had the same issue. Black after a day.

Now I went out and bought a Geek Vape Athena BF Kit. (love this kit, BTW) the dude threw in a couple CoilArt coils. I believe they are Ni claptons. Read at .3 ohms. Now these mofos hit like a truck, ramp up immediately, and after a day of use they are still shiny, not black.

I guess my question is this:

Is this just the difference in the metals, or is it a difference in the actual quality of the coils?

I like a balance between flavor and clouds. Any suggestions for coils to buy? Don't have any interest in building them myself right now.

Galaxies MTL by Vapefly

I recently got my hands on this new mtl dripper from China and I’m really happy about it!

What most captured my attention was the airflow and the fixed coil positioning, as opposed to the “free” coil positioning in others more famous mtl drippers (viper v2, speed revolution, strike etc.)

It’s a 22mm, so I wasn’t expecting a great flavor with tobacco flavorings (which are my preferred) but, boy, I was wrong!

Pros:

  • Airflow: as expected it is possible to set it up in many ways. It has 3 holes per side (0.8, 1.2, 1.5 mm) but it’s also possible to further restrict the flow via 2 screws on the inside of the deck, which makes it super easy to find the perfect set up. The cap has stopping points which make convenient to unscrew the dripper from the mod and easier to regulate the airflow itself.

Bonus point: I thought it was gonna be easy to make it leak due to the downward slope of the airflow, which has the highest point on the inside of the deck, but I was wrong. The deck is pretty capable of holding a lot of liquid and it’s not so easy to over squonk. So far I never had it leaking!

  • Hit: although it’s a 22mm, this atomizer has a really good hit, I would have never expected it! Surprised!!

  • Easy build: the coil building it’s extremely simple since the coil placement is kinda forced. The only control over its positioning is about its’ height.

I reckon this might be a con to some of you but for me it’s a huge pro. I was tired of always trying to guess which was the perfect coil positioning on my speed revolution !

  • Flavor: surprising on tobacco flavors! Creams will have the best results in this atomizer due to the 22mm but I love organic tobacco and they still come out really well from this atomizer!

  • Look: I like it ! It’s simple, no gimmicks and clean; the ultem gives a good contrast and overall it looks elegant.

  • Price: you can find it between the 25-28 dollar mark. (I got it in preorder at 14 dollars… 14!!!)

Cons:

  • Squonk pin: it has 2 holes in it which kinda tell you they have be directed into each side of the deck, but if you screw it all the way down (otherwise you get a check atomizer message as it’s not adjustable) the holes don’t pair exactly with the sides of the deck. Not a deal breaker to me.

  • Airflow downwards slope: I feel that if it was designed on the other way around, such as the pulse for example, it would have been less prone to the minimal risk of leaking (although, as I said, I never got it to leak until now and I’ve used it for 3 days already in squonk mode).

I’ve seen the P.Busardo’s review about it and I tend to agree on most of the things he said, except the fact that he considers a “con” the impossibility of dripping through the mouthpiece. Well, mtl drippers , despite their name, aren’t designed to be used as drippers. I see Busardo it’s not familiar with many “squonk” drippers (strike, viper v2, speed revolution and these kind of atomizers from 14 to 18mm) but no one would even think of using these atomizers dripping with them!

For me, then, the fact that it’s impossible to drip with the galaxies is not a con at all, I’m used to the mtl drippers and I use them in squonk mode with no issue at all !

I’m not a reviewer but I thought it would be nice to share the good impressions I got from this atomizer, since it’s the first cheap alternative to the others mtl drippers around.

I’ll leave a couple of photos for you guys!

Cheers!

The vApe_Escape sale thread

Morning all. It’s time to be a little serious. Those of you who frequent or lurk the Late Night Chat may have seen that our friend Joe – /u/vApe_Escape – has had a week that nobody would wish on their worst enemy. He lost his father, suddenly and unexpectedly, on the 13th and now has expenses he hasn’t budgeted for, and as a student, probably couldn’t have.

In the 3 or so years I’ve been floating around ECR under various handles, each more stupid than the last, Joe has been unfailingly kind, helpful and generous to me. I’m sure a lot of you have had the same experiences…without too much fluff on it, he’s a good guy.

Joe had no idea any of this was going to happen until I got logistics into place where it could be very quickly pushed live, and the button on it being pushed would be his call, and his alone, to make. He hasn’t asked anyone for anything. I ask ECR as a community to help someone out who’s in a spot that none of us would wish to find ourselves in, and by the grace of God, hope we never do.

Vendors have offered their support, time and profits to contribute. I know we’re just after the Valentine’s Day sale season, but if you missed it, didn’t get round to buying something, or for mercenary reasons, want to take advantage of these good deals, you’d be doing something really good as well.

Question regarding current draw in a regulated mod

I have read Mooch's blog post here:

<a href="https://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/blog-entry/calculating-battery-current-draw-for-a-regulated-mod.7532/”>https://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/blog-entry/calculating-battery-current-draw-for-a-regulated-mod.7532/

Which suggests the following equation for calculating per battery current draw in a regulated mod:

((Maximum wattage/number of batteries)/minimum battery voltage))/0.9

In my example, I am using a Sigelei Fuchai 213, running a dual 24g ribbon nichrome build reading at 0.16ohm. Installed are married Samsung 25R rated at 20A. I have been adjusting the wattage to the point where the mod displays 20A. On my current build I can get to 73.5W and stay at 20A. However, I get a much nicer vape at 80-85W. Using the above calculation it seems I would be very safe to vape at 85W:

85/2 = 42.5w per battery / 3.2v minimum = 13.2A/0.9 = 14.76A per battery.

The above suggests that I am well within safety limits and I was hoping for a math check that I'm fine. The mod is regulated after all and the blog post from u/Mooch315 seems well regarded. Not keen on having batteries explode on me, even though I'm hardly going wild at 85w on this simple build.
